A recent paper by Ryabov et al. in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) presented new approaches for describing functional diversity. The quantification of functional diversity usually requires the identification of species traits, but, unfortunately, there is no universal definition of what constitutes a trait.
